Default International nookbook Purchase Now Possible?

I just went to the local BN today and a staffer told me that you can now buy nookbooks internationally as long as you have a US credit card linked to your BN account. This was a pretty big surprise, considering all the previous talk about about how buying overseas wasn't possible even under those conditions. I didn't ask -- the staffer volunteered this information as we talked about the new tablet, etc. I asked if there was an announcement about this, but he said they learned about it when the tablet info came out.

See entire thread here on this topic - this was the only real reference I could to this development, and it's thin at best, but something. (Ignore post from SE_Hume; that's me.)
"If your default credit card has a US/Canadian BIN you can now purchase books on your NOOK from Barnes and Noble worldwide. Just FYI."

Has anyone heard something similar? Has anyone tried purchasing a book from their nook while overseas of late? (I had success in October, but used VPN as was unaware of this VPN-less possibility.) This would be a huge boon for travelers and folks living outside the US, and a great marketing point, I think.

I have a friend living in Sweden who's interested in the tablet and wondering if it's going to work with the internet over there? I don't really see how it wouldn't work - with just internet - but maybe there's something I'm not aware of, like differences in wireless networks or something? She's already aware that she'd have to make alternate plans to buy nookbooks for it. Am i correct in thinking the new B&N tablet is much like a regular tablet with a few pre-loaded things on it? Or am I totally wrong and this is not a good product for her to even think about? Can you explain more about VPN to me too - does she have to have a US-based credit card for that to work too?

It would be great for them to have a product that was INTL! I don't understand why they don't if the new tablet isn't. It definitely would be a great marketing point!

So far no other posts about purchasing books directly (without VPN) while abroad ... maybe have to go back to local store and ask again to see if they meant it. The only other things I see are (vague) references to future international plans, but no details at all.

As for buying a nook from abroad, I think there are other posts here about what to do - I haven't done this personally.

I take that back, just saw this article - see 2nd to last paragraph

"So which device is better for you? There are a number of facets to consider based on where you live. If you reside outside of the USA, the Kindle Fire ecosystem is not compatible with non-US markets. The App Store, Prime, and videos are USA based only and will not work unless you use a VPN. The Nook Tablet allows you to use almost everything if during registration you “mention” a USA based address. It does not do any IP checks for content based on your actual location."

I chatted with support last night asking this very same thing!
they basically said that as long as you input a US Billing address and a US Credit card purchases are possible as no IP check is implemented now!!!
which is awesome, only If I had a credit card,,,

you see I live in Texas but I am moving to mexico for at least a year and my parents dont trust giving out CC Info anywhere on the net, leaving me with no CC to use, is there any work around for this? i REALLY want a nook tablet over a kindle touch (since amazon prime is not available outside the U.S. the fire is out of the equation for me)

Get a prepaid card, I don't remember what it is called. Just put $40 or so on it at a time.
    That should be plenty safe!

    Default debit card?

Does anyone know if you can use a US-based debit card to buy Nook books internationally? Has raised numbers, but no iridescent visa/mc symbol (just a plain color one).

Not sure about debit, lenamills, but can now confirm that purchasing on Nook tablet with US-based CC in profile works while overseas. MikFinkel, I had some B&N gift cards loaded in my profile, and those worked as well.
