Smile If you were to sell me a Nook...

Hello, I am new to the eBook world. I am one of those who was convinced I would never have use for an ereader plus I love to hold a book. However, like many others who have felt this way at one time, I believe I will convert. I thought the best place to go would be to the users themselves. My husband just got the Kindle Fire and I can not pry it out of his hands to really check it out. My sister-in-law is the same way with hers. I am considering a Nook reader. I do have a 2 1/2 year old who I wouldn't mind occasionally entertaining while traveling or waiting somewhere. Truthfully, I am always the last to upgrade, the last to use new technology, etc. I have a older model ipod touch that I use daily and I read eBooks occassionally on. I am an author and am on the internet often. I am wondering about others opinions on if I was to buy an ereader which would you suggest? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Our family was just like you. We all insisted that we loved reading "real" books. My son said he loved the smell of books! But we have bookcases filled with books and my husband is retiring soon and we will be RVing. No room for books. So I got a Nook classic for my birthday. Immediately loved it. But so did my husband. He loved the idea of having all of our books with us. He got a Nook classic, and our son began to read mine. So I got a Nook color, gave my Nook classic to the son and we have all been happy. I really didn't think I would love it this much, but I do. I rooted my Nook color so I can use it as a tablet also, but I love reading any book at any time. I love the text to speech, because I do crafts and love that I don't have to put my book down or I can plug it into my car stereo. I have 2 sisters-in-law with Kindles and they love them, but I love the versitility of my Nook. Try them both out, that way you will know which one is best for you.

I would look at the Nook Color. It is a little less expensive than the tablet so if you son dropped it it wouldn't be quite as bad. Since you read on your Ipod you can handle reading on a LCD and there are several children's books and game apps available for your son. If you know you want to root then you might want to consider the Tablet and a square trade warranty to cover drop damage. The big advantage to rooting is access to the android app store which has a huge selection of game apps, but I am not sure what kind of games a 2 or three year old would play. (I've never really been around kids.)

Thanks for you thoughts! I knew there were others out there who felt like me. I have books in just about every room of my house. Glad to know you all fell in love with a digital reader. I know what text to speech is but what is rooted? Oh I feel so untechie! I am going to Barnes and Noble to check them out this weekend and I will wait until my husband falls asleep to look at his Kindle Fire tonight. LOL!

My husband and I talk about when he retires (I will write until I am no longer on earth) we will travel the US in an RV and take the kids along to whatever states they want to travel too. He loves baseball (Red Sox fan). I want to travel so we will travel to different stadiums. He says he will try a hot dog in every one. I don't think I will.

I was kind of leaning toward a Color or a Tablet. Thank you for the advice! My daughter enjoys playing games on my ipod. There are actually quite a bit that are educational. It saves me sometimes when we go to dinner and are waiting for our food. I may just save the ipod for her games and only read picture books to her on the reader. You have given me somethings to think about. I do have another question. Is there password protection on the Nook? For instance, if I did let my little one explore on the Nook would she be able to accidentally buy things? She did this once when I was updating my ipod and I guess my password was still logged on, thank goodness it was only $3.99 spent.

Rooting is when you turn your nook in to an android tablet. You can do it with out voiding your warranty by using an SD card. If you aren't tech savvy, but want to root you can try these http://n2acards.com/. You can lock buying and I believe you can lock the web browser and social networks. The library can't be locked, but since he isn't old enough to read that won't currently be an issue.

I did check them out at the store and did feel a little overwhelmed. I still can't decide between the Color and the Tablet. It is a bigger purchase especially when you start adding accessories so I am taking my time with my decision. What are your thoughts on a Certified Pre-Owned Nook Color? They are $50 less. I have only bought one item refurbished before which was a universal remote and it works great. I think it actually wasn't used at all. I know sometimes with electronics that can happen. A person returns something they opened and it wasn't even used. Anyone bought a used Nook though B&N?

My Nook Color was a refurbished one from B&N - works just fine. I'm running it rooted with an N2A card. Haven't had any problems with it.

I would buy a used one if I had the option. In fact since I gave my aunt my N1E I intend to pick up a used STR nook. They come with the same warranty as the new ones and cost less.

Thank you, I am going to go to B&N once more tonight and check them out again before making my final decision. I have decided on a Nook over a Kindle for sure since my husband has a Fire.
