    Default Future of Nook/B&N?

I just read this article about both Barnes and Noble and Best Buy. I bought my Nook Color at BB with the full two year replacement plan (basically can take it back within two years with any problem (even if that problem is that I ran over it with my car) and get $250 to replace the item with any new item). I plan to do this sooner rather than later since it seems BB may not be around much longer. However, since it looks like B&N might not be around either, I am hit with the decision of replacing with a Nook Tablet (what I prefer to do), or cutting my losses on the Nook books I've bought (not many... I mostly do library checkout) and switch to the Kindle Fire. I prefer the Nook, but I'm nervous to invest more if it's going to go away in terms of future enhancements/support.

If you buy a Fire, you don't have to "cut your losses" with your B&N books - you can install the Nook app on the Fire and access them that way. Personally, I've found that I prefer my Fire to my Nook Color, but that doesn't mean you would.

    1) Install the B&N reader app on your home computer and download your books to your computer. Then it doesn't matter what happens to B&N. As you will still be able to download them from your computer to your Nook tablet.
    2) Soon you will be able to have a N2A card for your nook tablet as I rolled my own for the Nook Color.

This allows me to install alternate options like the Kindle app and buy read amazon books.

With a little bit of planning any device can be expanded to include what you need to read. Just because B&N or BB close their doors doesn't make the device less usable. You will still have Your B&N books on your computer to copy to your device.

There is the Library as you mentioned and many other book sites besides amazon for ebooks.

Sorry I just don't get all the worry. And many upgrade their devices every year or two anyways.

Puck, thanks for the link to the Android msd card, it looks very nice. Could you tell us what kind of set up is involved? Am presuming we would download the B&N e-reader app for Droid and then get all our books from B&N? Have you had any problems running this card?

btw, the our particular concern about B&N is that we have almost 200 books, some quite expensive. Yes, we can load an app on the iMAC or iPad to read the books, but what if B&N is no longer around to update their apps for new OS updates? It is not uncommon for new OS's to require updated apps. We are worried about the investment in the books, not the Nook Tablet. Right now we are not purchasing further books from B&N. Yes, we know about DRM, but it hurts my soul to have to go that way to use something we should be able to use without hacking. JMO

Wonder if the iPad 3 will have a 7" screen version....probably not huh?

And if enough people start to do that this would become a self fullfilling prophesy, now wouldn't it?

I still buy my books from B&N and others.
If B&N folds, I will just have to figure out how to strip the DRM and move on.
The last thing I am going to do is to stop buying books from B&N at this point.
I don't want to be a part of helping B&N fold.

Could you point me in the direction of how to learn? I've tried using Calibre plug ins but they never work, well not for me at least.

Try the latest version of Calibre and updated the plugins. I have had great success. If I buy an e-book from B&N or Amazon using their PC aps or from elswhere such as Baen Books, I can then just drag and drop into Calibre. I have it translate all my books to epub so I can read them on my nook or on my Droid. I have a Nook Tablet and my wife has a Simple Touch. If I do a USB hook to my PC with Calibre up, it tells me what books are on my Nook and lets me remove them or add more from my Calibre PC library. The author seems to update and improve the program a couple of times a month. I have hundreds of e-books, most out of copyright, in my Calibre library. It is a great piece of shareware that lets me not be tied to any one publisher or format.

I'll give it another try, maybe I am not doing something right. Can I ask where you find updated plugins at? I just did a google search to find the one I used which did not remove the drm.

Plug-ins are here: http://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/2...1/hello-world/ You won't find the necessary plugins on Calibre itself.

For Nook books, be careful to follow the directions in the txt file that accompanies it - especially the one about entering your name and cc#. That's where I've messed up when I've had an issue. Your Name,1234123412341234 (watch your spacing - or lack thereof).
