Default Can/Will One Be Able to Read Foreign Language eBooks on Nook?

While I was browsing for eBooks from the NYPL, I noticed some Chinese eBooks available for borrowing. Can we read Chinese or any other foreign language books on the Nook?

I do not believe so. The problem is that there are only three font choices. I do suppose you could load jpgs in PDF but the image would be so small you could never read it. I imagine that French, Spanish and German could be read because they use the same alphabet.

As long as the appropriate font is embedded in the .epub file I don't see why you wouldn't be able to read an ebook in, say, Chinese. As Kevin says books in most western European languages are no problem since those languages, and English, use the Roman alphabet. If the font isn't embedded in the file, though, I would expect the text might render as nothing but question marks or a series of squares.

The problem I see in having the font embedded Michael is that you would not be able to enlarge the text because the file then would act like an image file and the print would be too small to read. I had this problem with one file.

Not necessarily, Kevin. I could be wrong but the way I understand EPUB files is they are just a ZIP file of a collection of HTML, XML, and images. If a specific font is desired then that font file can be included in the .epub. I'm assuming that if the font contains more than one size then that would enable the reader to change the font size on Nook. At least that is my understanding of how it should work.
