Having spent $10 each for power adapters for my wife's kindle and my nook I tried switching them between these devices and they seemed to work fine. Can I do any damage to either device if I use both power adapters for both devices?

No the Nook uses a proprietary usb cable that has two addition pins for power charging from AC. Can use it in computer as computer will only use the standard 2 pins for charging. But for charging will take many more hours in the 6-10 hrs depending on charge started with. And either cable would probably work for transfering content as such.
And there is no way to tell as looks like you already tried it before finding out. Which is a No-No for me without knowing for sure. Using either on PC hookup is probably fine I imagine. But hooking up to AC to charge I wouldn't chance it.

You don't say which Nook/Kindle, eInk or tablet? You say adapter, though, so I assume you mean eInk: I used to use the charger for my original Nook on my Kindle and it worked fine - my daughter, however, tried using the Kindle charger for her Nook and said whenever she did she'd end up having to reset the Nook - it just didn't like the Kindle charger. We're talking the original Nook though, and 2nd generation Kindle (I think all the Kindle adapters are the same, actually).
I've used an Apple adapter on my Kindle, works fine. B&N one works fine as well. Can't speak to vice versa, though, as I only have a Nook Color now.
