    Default What is Rooting?

Just got a Nook Color - LOVE IT! But as I'm reading these boards, I am seeing discussions about "rooting" the Nook color. What does this mean? What are the benefits? Should I do this??

Would you like your nook color to act like an Ipad? Then you probably would like to root but B&N has an application store coming real soon that may give us a lot of what we want without needing to root. Rooting is a safe hack that allows you to run almost any Android application on your nook color.

Rooting is the equivalent to jailbreaking your Iphone. You get more features! I wanted to root my nook but the firmware is 1.5 and just way too complicated for me to understand.

So, unless my SO is totally clueless AGAIN I will be getting a NC on Monday for my bday. I told him he could root it. Should I do honeycomb or the one before that? Once the update happens will the root be undone? What _I_ want the NC to do is play angry birds, surf the web and read magazines. I figure if he gets to mess with the NC there will be no fear of him playing around with my nook.

My hubby successfully rooted mine with 1.5 firmware, but he did have a little trouble with it at first. I'm lucky he's so tech-savvy... I would never have attempted it myself.

The best way to think of it is that the nook is YOUR device. If you root it you have complete access to it instead of the limited access it is stocked with.

I rooted my Nook today. It worked okay but it keeps getting locked up. If this continues, I will want to bring it back. How do you do that?
