Default Regarding Sleep Mode or Off Mode

Reading through the Nook guide it plainly states that it's not necessary to turn the nook off, you can simply put it to sleep and that is fine. My question comes then - well which is better for the battery life? Or does sleep mode not affect the battery life enough to worry about?

Which mode do you use most often? Do you have specific instances when you will turn it off or when you will put it to sleep?

Just curious as to others opinions on this because I haven't even had my nook for 2 weeks yet and I'm sure you guys have a lot more experience on these issues!

I do like having it on sleep mode (as long as i figure out it doesn't use up the battery too much) because it displays my lovely screensaver picture.

I never turn my nook off, just put it to sleep. I get about a week out of the battery before I need to charge it.

I'm not sure how true it is, but I figure powering it down and powering back up again would use the battery faster than putting it to sleep. I know for sure I hate waiting for it to power up!

Interesting. I have noticed when I turn it off and turn it back on it does take quite long to "load."

I never before considered NEVER turning it off.. that's kinda cool.

I too had the same thought that maybe turning it back on every time would use a bigger burst of battery power than it would be to just let it come back after having a little nap.

I switch between reading DTBs and ebooks, so I only turn my nook off when I'm reading a long DTB. That way I don't have to charge it right away when I've finished with the DTB and am ready to read an ebook. If the DTB is short and I'll get through it in a day or two, I don't bother. I think I've only turned my nook off a total of 5 times since I got it December 10th.

If you want to squeeze the absolutely most life out of a charge then turning off Nook between reading sessions is better. Some folks on the boards have even reported that B&N has told them it is expected that Nook users should turn the device off when not in use. Because when Nook is off it does not use any battery charge; when in sleep, which is a low power use mode, it does still drain the battery.

Thanks, that helps me a lot. I think that I will probably turn it off most of the time and only let it sleep if I know I'm going to be coming back to it fairly soon. But if I'm not going to be using it until the next day or something then I'd rather save the battery and turn it off.

Thanks for all the in-put. It is very interesting to me (esp. right now while my nook is so new to me) how other people are using there nooks.

I have never turned off my nook (got it early January) and never turned off my Kindle (got it last April). The savings of battery isn't enough for me to have the patience to wait for it to boot up!! I just charge it every week or so and I am good to go .....

    Cheers!
