Default What is a good Sci Fi book for a newbie Sci Fi reader

I love Sci Fi movies! but I can't seem to get into Sci Fi books. Anyone have a must-read Sci Fi book? Or a good Sci Fi Author?

Surely, you have seen Star Wars...? The timeline is thick in Lucas' universe, but it's unnecessary and confusing to read everything that happened in a galaxy far, far away. If you are interested in finding out what happens with the Skywalker/Solo peeps a few years down the road from Return of the Jedi, read "Star Wars:The New Jedi Order - Vector Prime" by R.A. Salvatore. He is one of my favorite writers in the sci-fi and fantasy genre's.

It depends what kind of SF you want to get into. Some people like the Pern novels. Even though they seem like fantasy, they get more into science fiction as you go, so a good transition for beginners, especially if you like dragons.

I tend to like a variety but prefer stories with a romantic element. Or if you don't mind some Christian themes (subtle), you might like Kathy Tyers' Firebird novels, although I'm not sure if they're still in print. (She's also a very nice person.) She also wrote a Star Wars universe novel, but at the moment I can't think of which one. I write SFF with romantic elements and my Starfire Angels might be to your liking, if you like what seems like urban fantasy but given a science fiction twist.

Some of the Babylon 5 tie-in novels are quite good, especially if you love B5. Then again, any show that you like will have novels based on it. Some writers are good and some don't get the characters, but those good ones are gems, because you get to relive your favorite characters in new ways.

Baen Books puts out a lot of good military SF from authors like David Drake, Eric Flint, and Michael Williamson. David Weber's Honor Harrington series might be to your liking, but I don't know exactly what kind of SF you do like.

There's cyberpunk, steampunk, space opera, military, etc. Pick a subgenre or a few

If you're a Star Wars fan, I'd have to recommend the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. I love his stuff. His Conqueror's trilogy was also excellent.

David Weber's Honor Harrington series is good too.

There are, of course, the classics, like Asimov's Foundation series.

A E Van Vogt, Slan, Silkie, The Weapon Makers
John Wyndham, The Chrysalids, The Kraken wakes, Trouble with Lichen
Jack Vance, City of the Chasch
Clifford D Simak, Catface, Way Station
Larry Niven, A World Out of Time, Footfall, Lucifer's Hammer

Don't bother with star wars, they are for children (or geeks), as is much modern Sci-fi, most bookshops don't even know the difference between sci-fi and fantasy IMHO.

Some fantasy authors also write science fiction. If you enjoy fantasy, you might like those authors' SF series. Lois McMaster Bujold comes to mind as one who writes in both genres.

And the beauty of the Honor Harrington series is that they are all avalaible a ebooks, many for free.

I just finished Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold.. it was pretty good.

I recommend Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson! I've read it probably close to 10 times.

I highly recommend Isaac Asimov. In particular, I've always enjoyed the Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation). The Gods Themselves, The End of Eternity, and Pebble In the Sky.
