It's an insult to readers. It assumes that we don't understand historical context, and most people understand that in middle school. It is demeaning to young and older readers alike.

I was 11 when I first read Huck Finn. I am not scarred for life.

There are far scarier things that can be found all over the internet, or in Grand Theft Auto, than most anything in a published book. I don't think books will be the vanguard of "things from which we need to protect our kids" ever again. And they might be part of the cure.

Kind of silly to cut the N-word from Huck Finn when a good number of recording artists are making a living including it in their albums.

    now now MrMiracle....

parents, kids, whoever. have the right to ALSO purchase a CD that is censored and i DO NOT agree with them censoring it, i hate walking by albums in wal mart with "parental advisory" written across it.

however they have the option to do that. i've been thinking maybe it's not so different with books. SO LONG AS the other version is still available, why not give parents the right to shelter their children from words that are used as commonly as words like "and" and "the" i mean it doesn't make it right. but it is their right sadly

Huck Finn! How could THEY be after Huck Finn?
    They're not.
    There is no THEY.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are in the public domain, and anyone can use the text anyway they want. The THEY in this case is Alan Gribben, a Twain scholar from Auburn, and NewSouth, Inc. If you don't want their edited edition, don't buy it. Don't support it, and it will go into the dustbin of history.

7500 copies. Gutenberg shows over 31,000 downloads of the original just in the last 30 days.

I don't see the original text disappearing...unlike, say Agatha Christie's And Then There were None. Have you ever seen the original title? That was published in 1939. Or Charles Darwin's Origin of Species...we keep the subtitle in a tiny font, if we don't remove it entirely. Look that baby up sometime and see what the father of evolution (now in a high school near you!) really thought.

NewSouth could have done worse. They could have substituted zombie instead of slave. Sorry, they did that to Jane...
