Default Matthew McConaughey as "The Lincoln Lawyer?" Say it Ain't So!

Who would you cast in the role of Mickey Haller, who practices law out of his car in "The Lincoln Lawyer," Michael Connelly's legal thriller?

I'd go with Paul Giamatti or Chris Cooper or John C. Reilly, character actors with lived-in faces. But Hollywood needs star power to open a picture -- they think -- and I'm watching a preview with Matthew McConaughey. Wrong. All wrong.

Agree or disagree with the casting?

What are your favorite and least favorite casting choices?

BTW, when they make a movie from Laura Hillenbrand's "Unbroken," I'd like to see James Franco as Louie Zamperini. Your choice?

Having never read the book, I can't comment on this casting, but I CAN comment on worst casting!
Lestat and Tom Cruise should NOT even be used in the same sentence!!!!!

Have you seen "A Time to Kill" with Samuel L Jackson and Matthew McConaughey? He's actually quite good in that one, and he similarly plays a lawyer. I was surprised to see the depth he could manage with good material.

Totally with you on that one! I read the books way after the movie came out (and I didn't watch the movie until after I'd read the books), I was so stunned that they thought he was a good fit for that character!!

I cant comment about the Lincoln Lawyer either, I haven't read it (thought it is on my to-read-someday list). Even though McConaughey is known for chick-flicks/comic romances, I think he has it in him to play more serious roles. So I guess I will have a wait and see attitude. lol Although, I haven't read the book either, and that plays a big part on how people "see" the characters.

    Perhaps I spoke too soon.

The New York Times review treats both the movie and Matthew McConaughey rather gently.

Whether in books or movies, it's star power that sells. As an author, you should be very familiar with that. It doesn't matter if a lesser known is just as capable, maybe more, it's the name that brings in the big bucks.

Actually, I read that Michael Connelly saw McConaughey in "Tropic Thunder" and said to his wife "He could be Mickey Haller". So there's that....

We saw the movie today and I thought Matthew McConaughey did an outstanding job. I haven't read the book but who says a bottom-feeding lawyer can't be a handsome stud. I wish William H. Macy could have had a larger role.

    Okay, I was wrong!

    Finally saw the movie.

M.M. was fine. Believable. The character-establishing moments early in the film worked well.

I vow never to again review a movie or a performance BEFORE seeing it!
