Default Calibre too slow? or just me...

Have you noticed that calibre is taking some time to open up and execute simple commands?
It's not like my RAM would be overused, every other program works quite quickly, but calibre seems to be slow. Is it faulty software?

I also don't really have a problem with the speed. If you describe what you are seeing in more depth we can perhaps offer better suggestions. Also, have you tried searching the Calibre section on mobileread.com? The developer posts there and can perhaps offer some help.

I just updated to Calibre version 0.7.10 last night and my desktop is a bit low on virtual memory, yet the software seems to be working fine.

FYI: I generally find Calibre a bit to doggy to startup (including the icon not appearing correctly on my task bar initially), but that is probably just because of what it is and does. I really like the software.
