out of warranty Nook trade-in program
Hi there, just wanted to share some information about B&N's out of warranty Nook trade-in program. It took me a while to get a straight answer from B&N, but they seem to have gotten it right. Basically, if you have an out of warranty device, you can trade it in for a newer Nook. They will give you a monetary credit toward the new device. I am trading in a first-gen Nook (totally bricked, btw) and they let me buy a new Nook Simple Touch for $70 + tax. Thats about a $30 credit. Worth doing (you have to do it all by mail, and either by chat or phone). Good luck!
Here is the email I received:

This is interesting because it was only a few months after I bought my Nook that B&N came out with a better model at a lower price than I paid. I called to see if I could trade my old one in. At the time they had no trade-in policy. My Solution: I disassociated myself from B&N and bought a Xoom Tablet. I might have bought another Nook if they had offered me a trade but I'm kinda glad I didn't. The 10" Tablet is a much better way to go.
Absolute THANK YOU to Jaya67 for posting this information.
For anyone reading this who is curious, B&N STILL SUPPORTS THIS PROGRAM at least as of 8/2013!
I've now done this with TWO Nook 1st Editions - one about two months ago, and another more recently (still in process).
I could not get anywhere via online chat though, and if you dial the 1-800 number and follow the phone tree, do NOT select the option to say you have a Nook 1st edition or you will get a prerecorded message and disconnect. Instead, select the option indicating you have a Nook Simple Touch and you will get live support.
Each time I've done this the B&N people have been nice and efficient. Last time I had an email with a prepaid UPS label within five minutes, and the new (refurb) NST arrived in two business days. Can't complain for their efficiency. Just had to get my N1E out to them within two weeks.
The only bummer is the selection of "trade ins", which for me - both two months ago and this week were:
o Nook Simple Touch (either new for $50 or refurb for $30) -or-
o Nook Color (sorry forgot the price but a bit more, ~$80 or so)
Went with the NST refurb myself, and it works great. Just "ordered" another one which I'll give away.
