Tent City inmates are getting extra blankets to cope with the cold weather in Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has housed some overflow inmates in surplus canvas tents for years now.

Usually, the inmates have complained about Arizona's sweltering summer heat. But this week's cold spell has many Tent City inmates complaining.

Sheriff's officials say overnight temperatures inside the tents Tuesday night was 29 degrees as of 2 a.m. and 22 degrees at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday.

With the tent flaps down and no space heaters permitted, Sheriff Joe Arpaio says inmates are getting extra blankets.

Sheriff's officials say it's also cold for the detention officers assigned to the overnight guard duty for Tent City, but none of them are complaining.
