    Default Softroot or not?

    I just got my nook

It is a 3G/Wifi with the dreaded 10031... serial number but with 1.4.0 OS.

Has anyone had success softrooting these?

NOOKDEVS.COM is still posting this at the top of each of their pages (it indicates 'This page was last modified on 16 August 2010, at 00:31.'):

Barnes and Noble has likely introduced a new hardware revision which bricks your unit if you install their official 1.0.0 Firmware (A step needed to root). As of right now, Nooks with serial #s starting with 1003 (running firmware 1.4.1) cannot be rooted, and should NOT be attempted.

Since you seem to have a different firmware version, lets see what the NB techies have to say.

Yes I've seen that but as I noted, my firmware is 1.4.0 not 1.4.1 so I'm wondering if anyone has softrooted that on a 3G/wifi 100313....

Because in the discussion page on nookdevs this was reported.

Successful install on 100305 3g model (starting OS was 1.4.0)-- Devoid42

You may want to pop in on #nookdevs on irc.freenode.net. I know that 10030* 1.4.0 was successful, but am unsure if anyone has tried a 10031* with the 1.4.0 firmware... 1.4.1 is a sure brick :P

If it's running 1.4.0 then I'm pretty sure it is OK to softroot.

That's what I was hoping but I'm a bit nervous about trying.

it should be OK. since the new firmware 1.4.1 is for new hardware revision(sofar only for new revision). thus not backward compatible with older firmwares(because new device can only handle 1.4.1 it seems).

also i read that B&N is replacing bricked nooks(may no longer be true).

just fyi, it is still possible to buy older nooks with serial# 10030 or 10029. my friend was in US and managed to get two units 2days ago(wifi only).

I just got my 3g/wifi nook 4 days ago in-store and the serial is 100243... so there are still some out there
