    Default Calibre and Meta data plugboards

    Someone in another thread (iandix) showed a way to modify the metadata to add a series name and number when you side-load a book into your documents folder.

    https://www.nookboards.com/forum/inde...57382#msg57382

    I tried this and it works nicely, though I modified it a little bit. The way it was suggested, when the book shows up, it's in this format

    Source template: {series} {series_index} {title}

    So that it reads, for instance:

    Jack Reacher 11 Bad Luck and Trouble
    Lee Child

    The way I have my books shelved (with shelves named by alphabet then sorted by author), I prefer this:

    Source template: {title} - #{series_index} in the {series} series.

    Now, for instance, my books say:

    Bad Luck and Trouble - #11 in the Jack Reacher series.
    Lee Child

    It's a little longer, so many of the longer titles end prematurely with an ellipsis (...). Like this

    Bad Luck and Trouble - #11 in the Jac...
    Lee Child

    What I was wondering is this: Is there a font code you can put in that reduces the size of the text after the Title of the book, so that it is in the same reduced font as the author? I checked the help manual for Calibre, but that is so technical in places, I thought maybe someone here could point me in the right direction.

    TIA

    I should mention that if you try this, and your book is already side-loaded, you'll have to remove the book from the device first, using Calibre, then re-load it, after you make the appropriate changes to the Metadata Plugboard.

    Off the top of my head I'd guess that it's the nook that's showing the author name in a reduced font, not anything in Calibre. The only thing I can think of right now would be to put the series information into the author field in Calibre instead and see if you like how that looks.

    I figured out how to do this.

    Preferences->Metadata Plugboards
    then add the following
    Format [Any format] Device [Nook]
    Source template: {title}
    1st Destination Field [title]
    2nd line under Source Template
    {author} - #{series_index} in the {series} series.
    2nd Destination Field [author]

    and save

    This puts the series in the smaller font author line, thusly:

    Bad Luck and Trouble
    Lee Child - #11 in the Jack Reacher series.

    The only down side is that if you don't have a book with a series tag, it looks like this on the Nook:

    Bad Luck and Trouble
    Lee Child - # in the series.

    There needs to be a conditional code , like "If {series_index} and {series} Then ____, Else End", etc.

    This is not my own - shamelessly stolen from the Calibre forums, but you CAN do conditionals:

    {series} {series_index:0>2s| - | - } {title}

    The magic is in the middle. The characters after the first vertical bar will display before series_index only if it is non-null, and the characters after the second vertical bar will display after series index. Therefore, the dashes will only display if series index exists. Since series and series_index will both exist (or not exist) together, you'll get "Some Series - 01 - Some Title" (for a book in a series) and "Some Other Title" (for a book not in a series).

    The secret sauce of the magic is that Calibre is based on Python, and these plugboards are straight Python string formatting.

    Now I'm off to try the multiple line solution, since that hadn't occurred to me and now I need to steal THAT! If I get something working well, I'll post back.

    @fizzicist

    Here's what I put in the second line:

    {author} {series_index:0>2s| - #| in the {series} series.}

    It works perfectly, with a minor exception. The number in the series now has a 0 in front of it as in "#01 in the Jack Reacher series." instead of "#1 in the Jack Reacher series."

    Other wise, if there is no series tag, it doesn't add anything to the second line.

    What does the "0>2s" mean?
