Default How Do I Use Calibre?

Calibre is the best ebook organizer and sync utility available. But some questions have popped up concerning how to use it so I thought I would start a seperate topic for it since I use it frequently. Post your questions here and I'll do my best to answer them.

Calibre can be downloaded from here.

Default How do I add an ebook to Calibre's library?

How do I add an ebook to Calibre's library?

To add a book to the Calibre library:
    1. click the "Add Books" button in the top toolbar.
    2. Navigate to your downloaded ebook and select it.
    3. Click the "open" button and the ebook will be added to the library.

Once the book is in the Calibre library you can edit the metadata to your liking, then sync it to your eReader.

The ebook must already be an unprotected file to be converted. Calibre won't convert a DRM'd ebook. So... after you've added the unprotected book to the library follow these steps.

    1. If this is the first book you've converted you might want to set the global prefs for conversion. Click the Preferences button in the tool bar.
    2. In the Prefs window click the General option, if it is not already selected.
    3. Choose your output format from the "preferred output format" menu. Mine is EPUB but you may prefer something different. Calibre supports many output formats.
    4. For now, this is really all you need to set in the prefs so click OK.
    5. Next click the Convert E-Books button in the toolbar.
    6. The Output Format is going to already be selected; Make sure all the metadata is as you want it; Choose the Page Setup option in the left-hand menu.
    7. Choose your eReader hardware in the "output profile" menu. Mine is "Sony Reader" because that is what I have now. Click OK. There really isn't any need to refine the output any further.

After you click OK Calibre will convert the file to your preferred output format which can then be synced to your eReader.

This is really easy, once your ebook is converted to the appropriate format.

    1. Connect your eReader to your computer via USB.
    2. Launch Calibre.
    3. Highlight the ebooks you want to sync.
    4. Click the Send To Device button in the toolbar.

That's it. Calibre will sync the ebooks and when the little hour glass in the lower right stops spinning the sync is complete. Eject the eReader from your computer and you can start reading.

We already can. Nook supports the EPUB format and Calibre will convert any unprotected ebook to that file format.

I'm sure the developer, Kovid Goyal, will add Nook syncing support to Calibre not long after Nook hits the streets.
