Yeah it's hard to say since Amazon won't reveal who did their device, but they do look pretty similar!

Actually, Amazon doesn't go out of their way to publicize it, but it's not a major secret.

The Kindle/Kindle 2/Kindle DX was designed/developed by an Amazon.com subsidiary in Cupertino, Lab126.

Since both Lab126 and Ammunition Design Group include former Apple industrial designers, it's not too surprising the designs show common traits.

As for the original question about the nook, I believe Ammunition both designed and developed the product.

According to their site, they handled the entire project from product design through to packaging and interaction design/development.

Thanks - now we need to get to find out about the NOOK OS (as per how to access it, SDK, etc.)

If we could find the developer of the software of the NOOK OS - we could start finding a way inside. I know it is running on Andriod, but I am wondering how it may of been modified, the BIOS, and any other NOOK/Android-NOOK OS information we can start digging up.

    Thanks...

    Same guys, Ammunition Design Group.

Their "Interaction Design/Development" of the nook included the software.

    To quote from their site:

"The discipline of Interaction design spans the planning,
    design, conceptualization, validation, and development
of customer experiences in the realm of software, web-based
applications, and on-screen activity. Our team of user interface
designers, information architects, developers, and researchers
have skillfully created a long list of product, service,
commerce, publishing, and marketing success stories."

Now we just need them to share an SDK, posting something on their website, or to get one of the programers to come to this site and say, "this is how to...."

From the Ammunition Group website. They claim the following

    "nook by Barnes & Noble
    Product, Packaging, Strategy, Interaction

Working alongside the nation’s largest book retailer to extend its leadership in e-commerce and digital reading, Ammunition developed the service design, industrial design, user interface, accessory system and packaging for nook, Barnes & Noble’s disruptive new entry into the e-reader and electronic publishing market."

Notice "service design, industrial design, user interface accessory system and packaging" as the their creation. O0

I am intrigued that the guy running Ammunition Group spent 7 years heading up Apple's design group - a very good pedigree.

I think "packaging" does mean the box Nook with come in. I could be mistaken, though.

The pictures I've seen of Nook do suggest some influence from Apple's designs. Knowing the head of the design group used to work for Apple makes sense.
