Default non-US Nook owner, how to update Nook new software?

    Hi,

I use vpost asia US address to order Nook, and it will be shipped to Bangkok soon.

Just know that Nook already send new software over the air (I believe through dedicated AT&T carrier which does not work in Thailand).

For my case, anyone knows what is the workaround to update the software?

    Thanks

Actually, there has been no update sent yet, that was a rumor that was proved to be false. Allegedly, there should be one coming within a week or so.

Is it true that B&N can also send the update over the air through my home wifi too?

I think even if it can't that they will release the updates as a download on their site as even people in the US are sometimes out of 3G and wi-fi zones. So if you can't get them wirelessly hopefully you can at least download them.

Keep in mind that everything I'm about to type is speculation on my part.

I'm guessing that Nook will have to be registered with a My B&N account to get OTA updates. And since someone living outside the US probably can't register it it won't be able to get OTA updates. So I think Rachel is right. B&N will probably also release a downloadable updater at some point.

    Hi there folks,

I'm not quite into the same situation as the topic starter but still. A couple of days ago a friend of mine put an order on the nook that will be shipped to him (US, CA) not earlier then in January and later on delivered to me (Eastern Europe, Belarus). I guess - taking into account these rumors and considering such facts that it's a new device that was literally pushed into the market to enter it right on holiday time, it sure will have a set of varying software bugs / non-optimized code, etc - software updates and some sweet functionality later are inevitable.

Whatever the time of the first minor or future major update will be I'm also curios about the mechanics of the update process. Say for now 3G and WiFi are locked out to US cellular network providers and US range of IP addresses correspondingly. For me it sounds like a test period for BN themselves: granted the time needed for the services and platform to mature, contracts with major world operators signed, etc this gorgeous piece of gadgetry will be eventually sold world-wide. But the latter can take months (if not years and other product revisions) - I myself am crossing the fingers for the least time period required.

Back to our problem: whilst there's no need to explain why the inability to use the first connection type for downloading a software update outside US, there's a belief that you can do that via WiFi either - I think it's also sort of natural that there's no such thing there in the code to only allow you to do that via 3G. Then - if our US friends will confirm that the device requires only BN account w/o US credit card info (like the one anybody can register online at their site) during the initial device setup and registration - granted the chances registered nook owners will be given this software update without charges (e.g. no need in the credit card) you will only have to find a way to do some DHCP/DNS magic to get one.

And of course - as Rachel and Michael have pointed out in their replies above - BN should have (or will have to anyways with the inclusion of a software update look-up and tracker service in forthcoming versions running periodically or in a special boot mode invoked by some keys pressing sequence) thought about such a scenario when a software update gets downloaded by user on their computer, transferred onto the device to a specific directory / folder, device rebooted and the software update sequence is thus initiated. Don't know anything about it but the software update process I've been able to find a description of must follow the same scheme (reboot in a special mode, connect, download, mount, install).

Well, these are only my thoughts people. Glad to have found this site and you ladies and gentlemen (probably gadget lovers as I'm though this nook is a gift to my beloved), thanks for your knowledge and thoughts sharing - keep on posting!

B&N's Nook FAQ page now mentions that not only will they be pushed out overnight to devices, but the updates will be available for download from their website for those that need it.

This solves my problem too - I don't have AT&T here in the mountains, so was concerned about updates over wireless. Sounds like the fallback is to update through sideloading.
