Default WEEK 6 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (Ch. 51-60)

Regarding the monks who were martyred while making a pilgrimage to Sveti Georgi in Bulgaria - why do you suppose the Ottomans cut off their hands and feet when this was usually a punishment reserved for thieves and runaways? What do you think the Otto's thought the monks were stealing or running away from - or did they kill them in that particular way for another reason? (roughly pgs 481,482 if you want to go back for reference)

Since the Otto's weren't able to find what they were looking for when they searched the monks wagons - how do you think they hid Dracula's body in order to inter it at Sveti Georgi - do you believe that is what the Otto's were looking for? Or were they after something else?

Do you believe the drink the stranger at the tavern in Crete called "amnesia" made Rossi forget his trip to Romania and thus Helen's mother? Or is this just a red herring for the real culprit?

Who do you think bought him the drink at the tavern - Dracula, another vampire, or an innocent stranger?

Both of the manuscripts of the "Chronicle" were tampered with and parts removed - who do you think was responsible for the tampering and what do you believe was removed from the manuscripts? Why? (roughly pg. 485, for reference)

What do you believe the treasure was that the monks sought to help "hasten the salvation of the soul of the prince"? (quote roughly pg. 480)

    Any other thoughts, opinions, ideas?

I'm so confused now, I just don't know.
I think the Ottoman's knew that the monks were supposed to be carrying his body, and still punished them, even though there was lack of evidence. But I couldn't begin to guess how the body was hidden...
I do think the Amnesia made Rossi forget about Romania and I think it was done on purpose. He wouldn't just not go back, I think he really loved her.

No idea about the rest, I'm lost now. But I will say this: Poor narrator, grows up without her mom because her ancestor has to be a douche. :vampire:

I know, you can't help but think - so much loss and misery - for what? I mean this is a story that has it's reaches hundreds of years in the past and it's tale is told in blood and horrors, makes you wonder what it's all about. You can truly see the evil that has to be behind such events, for nothing seems like it could be worth all that has been done.

It's not funny, but your sentence is. I really felt for Helen in the moment that they were talking about the drink and she said she hated Vlad.

Maybe there was no body, to hid. Strange things started happening on that 2nd night, and Vlad was their hero. Maybe while on the escort mission, Dracula awoke, and since he's a revered guy the monks didn't say anything instead they just kept up the he's dead and getting buried in a secret place pretense.

At this point in the book I'm ready to scream stop introducing characters. It's already enough of a history class going thru 500 years of Ottoman rule; adding characters from all over the globe it's just too much.

It's funny.. because the first time I read this, I have to admit I was completely enthralled, I could hardly stop reading and the language was so rich and vivid.. this time around, while it's still a good story it's like the varnish has been stripped a little bit and it's just not as "shiny" as it was before.. I can't say why that is though.. it just seems like the story has stretched the believability point as much as she can and it's verging on bursting. The whole "oh what a strange coincidence to meet you" over and over is getting rather absurd, I know this is fiction and with that I'm allowing for a lot of liberties but still..

regarding your comment turtlenook, i'm not so sure the monks revere Vlad (at least most of them don't) I just think because he sponsored their church for so long and helped them, that the abbot felt an obligation (and made certain promises to Vlad before he died most likely) to Vlad and who knows, maybe he was also trying to protect his own church and didn't want the undead body of Vlad in his church so he sent it away

(it's getting tough for me to comment in these earlier threads because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who isn't up to pace, and for people who come to read these threads later as well) it's hard to remember for me what was in the earlier chapters and what was revealed after them..

I don't see how people that have read ahead aren't posting spoilers.

Please tell me that 61-70 have a little more action. The continued history lesson is getting old. 51-60 started out so interesting, with Turgut's story about his mother. I think the undead librarian needs to make an appearance. There needs to be another high tension confrontation; something besides eastern European political conflicts.

It's definitely getting more interesting as the story winds down to it's ultimate conclusion.

Have you seen spoilers? I've been on the lookout (and doing my best not to post any myself) but I haven't seen any
